GPS tracker detection

A magnetic tracker attaches to a vehicle in under ten seconds and runs for weeks. A hardwired unit runs forever and emits no Bluetooth signal at all, which is why phone apps do not find it. A physical and RF inspection does.

// Tracker types we find
  • Magnetic battery units attached to the chassis, wheel arches or bumpers. Weeks of runtime, no installation required.
  • Hardwired units spliced into vehicle power and running indefinitely. Invisible to consumer apps.
  • OBD port units plugged into the diagnostic port under the dashboard, drawing power directly.
  • Bluetooth tags dropped into a bag, seat pocket or boot lining. Detectable by app, but often missed.
  • Interior audio devices frequently placed alongside trackers. We check for both.

Why apps are not enough

Tracker detection apps look for Bluetooth advertisements. They are genuinely useful for finding a tag dropped in a bag, and we recommend running one as a first step. But the limitation is fundamental.

A GPS tracker reporting over the mobile network broadcasts no Bluetooth at all. It has no reason to. It talks to a tower, not to your phone. No app will ever see it. The same applies to a hardwired unit drawing vehicle power, which additionally has no battery signature and no reason to ever go quiet.

Finding those requires physical inspection of the places they are actually installed, combined with RF analysis across the cellular bands to catch a unit while it reports.

Where we look

01 //

Undercarriage and chassis rails

The most common location for magnetic units. Flat steel, out of sight, accessible in seconds from outside the vehicle.

02 //

Wheel arches and behind bumpers

Reachable without opening the vehicle and sheltered from road spray, which extends device life considerably.

03 //

OBD port and under dash

Plug in units draw permanent power and are concealed by the dash trim. Often overlooked entirely.

04 //

Interior, boot and trim cavities

Under seats, inside seat pockets, beneath boot lining and behind interior panels, where tags and recorders are commonly placed.

05 //

Engine bay and wiring looms

Hardwired units spliced into a live circuit, often tucked against the loom where they read as factory wiring.

Do not pull it off

The instinct on finding a tracker is to remove it and throw it away. That is usually the wrong first move.

A tracker that stops reporting tells the person monitoring that it has been found, at a precise moment and location. If your safety depends on them not knowing what you know, that matters enormously. The device is also evidence, and placing a tracker on another person's vehicle without consent is an offence under surveillance laws across Australian states.

// The right sequence

Leave it in place. Photograph it without disturbing it. Contact us, and if relevant your solicitor or police. We document it properly and advise on timing before anything is removed.

// FAQ

Common questions

Can AirGuard or a phone app find a GPS tracker?
It can find Bluetooth tags such as AirTags and Tiles, and running one is a sensible first step. It cannot find a GPS tracker that reports over the mobile network, and it cannot find a hardwired unit. Those require physical and RF inspection.
How long does a vehicle sweep take?
Usually around ninety minutes to two hours for a full chassis, interior, OBD and engine bay inspection combined with RF analysis. Larger vehicles take longer.
How much does a GPS tracker cost to buy?
Basic magnetic units start around twenty dollars online with weeks of battery life. That low barrier is exactly why vehicle tracking is so common, and why the absence of a Bluetooth alert means very little.
Should I have my car swept if I have moved house?
Yes, as a priority. A tracker fitted before you moved has already reported your new address. If you have relocated for safety reasons, the vehicle should be swept before you rely on that address being private.
