Hidden camera detection

Covert cameras are sold openly inside working smoke detectors, phone chargers, power outlets and alarm clocks. The lens can be under two millimetres across and is invisible from a metre away. Professional optical detection finds it.

// How cameras are found
  • Optical lens detection identifies the retroreflection every camera lens produces, regardless of whether it is powered.
  • Thermal imaging reveals heat from a powered device concealed inside a fitting or wall.
  • RF analysis detects cameras streaming over wifi or the mobile network.
  • Non linear junction detection finds recording-only cameras that emit no signal at all.
  • Physical inspection of every likely concealment point in the room.

Where cameras are actually placed

Placement follows sight lines. A device is put where it can see the most for the longest without being disturbed. In practice that means ceiling level fittings, power points at skirting height, and objects that sit naturally on a shelf or bedside table facing into the room.

Smoke detectors and ceiling fittings

Ceiling mounted, unobstructed view of the entire room, and never examined. Sold as fully working smoke alarms with a camera inside.

Chargers, adaptors and power outlets

Including units in genuine branded housings and hardwired wall outlets that cannot be unplugged and run indefinitely.

Mains powered

Objects facing the room

Clocks, speakers, picture frames, air purifiers, diffusers and candle warmers. Frequently introduced as a gift.

Bathrooms and bedrooms

The most serious category. Toiletry packaging, door hooks and air fresheners have all been used as housings.

Why you will not find one by looking

A pinhole lens at one to two millimetres does not read as a lens to the naked eye at normal distance. It reads as a screw head, a sensor, a speck. If the camera is inside your own smoke alarm, the object is identical to the one you expect to see, because it is that object, with a component added.

Optical detection does not rely on seeing the lens. It relies on the fact that a lens returns light directly back along the path it arrived on. That retroreflection is unmistakable through the detector and visible whether the camera is powered, unpowered, recording or dormant.

What we do when we find one

We photograph it in place before anything is touched, record its location and orientation, note what it can see, and identify the device type and capability where possible. If it holds storage we preserve it rather than opening it.

Then we talk to you about options. In some situations removing a device immediately is right. In others, particularly where legal proceedings are likely, preserving it in place with documentation is stronger. We advise, you decide.

// Before you touch anything

If you believe you have already found a device, leave it exactly as it is and contact us. Moving or dismantling it can destroy evidence and can alert whoever placed it.

Common questions

Can a phone app detect hidden cameras?
No. Apps that claim to find cameras either look for wifi devices on your network, which misses anything recording locally or using the mobile network, or use the phone camera to look for lens glare, which is unreliable at any real distance. Neither finds an unpowered device.
Can you find cameras that are not connected to wifi?
Yes. Cameras recording to an internal memory card emit no radio signal at all. These are found through optical lens detection and non linear junction detection, which do not depend on the device transmitting.
How long does a hidden camera sweep take?
A typical home takes two to four hours depending on the number of rooms. A single room of high concern can be done faster. We confirm scope and duration before attending.
What are the most common places you find cameras?
Smoke detectors, USB chargers and power adaptors, alarm clocks and speakers. In bathrooms, toiletry containers and door hooks. Devices in branded housings are the hardest to identify visually and the most commonly missed.
