My ex still knows where I am after I left

Leaving a relationship does not end surveillance. In many cases it intensifies. GPS trackers, dormant devices, shared accounts, and children's devices are all commonly used to monitor victims after separation.

// Key steps at a glance
  1. Check all shared location apps immediately - Find My, Google Maps, Snapchat, Life360.
  2. Check your children's devices for shared iCloud or Google accounts your ex still accesses.
  3. Download AirGuard and scan for Bluetooth trackers that may have been placed before you left.
  4. Do not assume your phone is clean. Stalkerware installed before separation continues to run.
  5. Contact Safe Sweep for a sweep of your new address and vehicle.

Post-separation tracking vectors

After separation, victims frequently assume surveillance ends. It almost never does without active intervention.

Location sharing apps you forgot about

Find My, Google Maps location sharing, Snapchat Snap Map, and Life360 are commonly set up during relationships and never disabled. Your ex may have a live view of your location right now.

Your children's devices

If your child's device is linked to a Family Sharing group or Google Family Link your ex controls, their device reports location in real time. Since the child is with you, your location is visible. This is one of the most overlooked vectors.

Children's Devices

GPS tracker on your vehicle

A tracker placed before you left continues to report location. Your car travelled to your new address. A vehicle sweep should be a priority if you have relocated.

Trackers in your belongings

AirTags can be concealed inside bags, jacket pockets, children's toys, or items you packed when you left. If you brought possessions from the shared home, a tracker may have travelled with them.

Devices placed in your new property

If your ex has had any access to your new address - to drop off children, return belongings, before locks were changed - devices may have been placed. Your new home is not automatically safe.

// 02 - Checking Location Sharing Now

What to check and how

iPhone - Find My

// Settings - your name - Find My

Check Share My Location. See exactly who can see your location and remove anyone you do not trust.

iPhone - Family Sharing

// Settings - your name - Family Sharing

If your ex is still listed as a family member they may have location access. Remove them from the group.

Google Maps

// Open Maps - profile photo - Location Sharing

Active sharing sessions are listed here. Tap each one to stop. Applies to both Android and iPhone.

Snapchat

// Bitmoji - Snap Map settings

Check whether location is set to Ghost Mode. If not, switch to Ghost Mode to stop sharing with all contacts.

// Children's devices - iCloud and Google

On your child's iPhone or iPad: Settings - child's name - Find My - Share My Location. Also check Family Sharing. On Android: check Google Family Link. If your ex is still listed, they have real-time location access. Before removing access, speak to your DV support worker or solicitor - in some family court situations abruptly cutting access can have legal implications.

// 03 - Your New Address May Already Be Compromised

If your ex knows where you are

If your ex has already demonstrated knowledge of your new location - arriving there, referencing it, or making it clear they know where you are - assume the surveillance extends to your new property.

A Safe Sweep of your new address will determine whether devices were brought in with your belongings, placed during any access your ex had, or transmitted location data after you arrived. This sweep should happen before any sensitive conversations at your new address.
